About the museum

The Museo del Novecento e del Contemporaneo di Palazzo Fabroni is housed in the palace named after the noble Pistoia family of the Fabroni, who lived there until 1842. The building stands in via Sant’Andrea, opposite the Romanesque pieve (parish church) of Sant’Andrea with the famous pulpit by Giovanni Pisano. Since 1990 it has housed the modern and contemporary art collections of the Comune di Pistoia, and since 2009 the museum has been a member of the Associazione dei Musei d’Arte Contemporanea Italiani.

The permanent collection grew out of the original civic holdings, acquisitions and donations, and presents a chronological route and thematic groups of works from the art scene of the 1920s to the present day. On the ground floor is the section devoted to the art of Pistoia in the 20th century, from the second half of the 1920s to the late 1960s, alongside the reception areas and a video installation on the history of the building.

On the first floor, around the large double-height hall decorated with Claudio Parmiggiani’s Scultura d’ombra, the route continues with rooms devoted to individual artists from Pistoia – Mario Nigro, Fernando Melani, Gualtiero Nativi and Agenore Fabbri – and with rooms displaying works donated to the Comune by the many artists who have taken part in events in Pistoia since 1990. The second floor is reserved for temporary exhibitions. At the back, beyond the wide loggia, the garden was redesigned between 2019 and 2021 as a contemporary “giardino d’autore” (artist-designed garden) and enriched by the sound art work SOUND LIFE.
