About the museum
When he returned from the capital in 1922, Luigi Varoli set up his studio in the so-called “stalla degli Sforza” (Sforza stable), a semi-derelict building overlooking the courtyard of the family palace of his wife Anna. In 1937 the artist, aware of the building’s historical value, oversaw its restoration together with the heritage authority (Soprintendenza). Surveys showed that originally the building had not been a stable but perhaps the family chapel of the Attendoli-Sforza.
Between November 1944 and April 1945 the bombardments along the Senio front destroyed Cotignola, including the Arti e Mestieri school and Varoli’s house and studio. The building was rebuilt: the ground floor became the artist’s home, the first floor his studio and school. In 1991 it housed the music school; between 2009 and 2011 it was set up as a house-studio, with objects, sculptures, drawings and finds returned to it.
In 2023 the Emilia-Romagna Region recognised it among the “Case e studi delle persone illustri” (homes and studios of distinguished people), and in April 2024 the new, expanded display was opened, comprising the house-studio and the sections “I Giusti” (the Righteous), “Cotignola 44-45” and “Varoli contemporaneo”.
