About the museum
The house on Via Rocca in Lugo belonged to the grandfather of Gioachino Rossini. The composer never lived there, but the family came from Lugo and he lived here as a teenager between 1802 and 1804, studying music; in those years he composed the Sei sonate a quattro (Six Sonatas for Four). The house has two floors.
The idea of a museum was born in 2018, 150 years after the musician's death, and the house museum was inaugurated on 24 October 2020. The Comune di Lugo runs it as a place dedicated to Rossini's youth and the development of his talent.
The route unfolds through four rooms with a theatrical layout: the Prodigio, the Mappa, the Risonanza and the Dispensa. Visitors listen to music, look at scores and images, and read the words that writers, philosophers, musicians and scientists have dedicated to the composer.
Highlights
- Prodigio room with four interactive “scores” of the Sei sonate a quattro
- Mappa room with a map made of crystal bells
- Risonanza room with words about Rossini and a suspended bookcase
- Dispensa room with Massimo Pulini's visual interpretation
Permanent exhibitions
- Sala del Prodigio – Installation based on the first movement of the Sei sonate a quattro: four booklets on music stands each reproduce one melodic line and, opened together, give the complete composition.
- Sala della Mappa – On the first floor, a long table with crystal bells forms a map of Rossini's places of life and work; lifting a bell plays the chosen piece of music.
- Sala della Dispensa – On the ground floor, Massimo Pulini's “exploded” pantry visually interprets Rossini's compositions inspired by food.
