About the museum
The castle stands on a limestone hill above Posada, in a dominant position over the plain of the Rio Posada and the coast. Its construction date is not known with certainty, but it already existed in the 13th century and served to defend the territory from pirate raids. The village lay on the border between the Kingdom of Gallura and the Judicate of Arborea and was the seat of the rulers of Gallura and of Eleonora of Arborea; around 1380 it passed to the Aragonese, then returned under Brancaleone Doria and, after the fall of the Judicate, was granted to the Carròs family and turned into a barony.
Of the ancient fortress remain an irregular quadrangular enclosure of walls, a three-storey square tower with a crenellated crown and several well-preserved cisterns. The name derives from a legend: during a siege by Saracen pirates, the inhabitants are said to have given their last broad beans to a pigeon and let it fly towards the enemy camp; seeing the bird full, the besiegers are said to have believed the town still had plenty of supplies and withdrawn.
