About the museum

The castle of Introd stands at almost 900 metres above sea level, above the confluence of the Dora di Rhêmes and the Savara stream, where the Gran Paradiso National Park begins. Its origins date back to the 12th–13th century: the tower is the oldest part, and the other structures were added around it. The first reference to a fortified house of the lords of Bard dates from 1242, when Amadeus IV of Savoy assigned Introd to Marco di Bard; his son Pietro Sarriod rebuilt it in the unusual polygonal form.

After a fire in 1855 the castle suffered serious damage and was abandoned. In 1912 it was bought by Alberto Gonella, who entrusted the engineer Giovanni Chevalley with a reconstruction in Neo-Gothic style; the painter Giovanni Chiapasco produced painted decorations, and the furnishings were largely made by local craftsmen in Neo-Gothic style. The castle thus recalls elements of other well-known castles of the Aosta Valley.

The external appearance retains a medieval character, including the rural structures such as the two 15th-century granaries at the entrance. Nearby are the medieval parish church and the cascina L'Ola, from the first half of the 15th century. In 2022 the regional administration acquired the property to begin its study, restoration and enhancement; today the castle is managed by the Comune di Introd and can be visited on guided tours in seasonal periods.
