About the museum

The museum was created by the Gerbore family to commemorate Joseph Gerbore, one of the pioneers of farm mechanisation in the Aosta Valley. Born in 1900 in the village of Lyveroulaz to a very poor family, he brought water to his own farm, built a house with modern amenities and in 1950 opened a farm machinery dealership in Aosta, which effectively marked the start of the motorisation of the Aosta Valley's countryside. In 1965 he also planted a specialised two-hectare vineyard.

The exhibition was inaugurated on 15 July 2002 under the title “Gli albori della meccanizzazione agricola in Valle d'Aosta” and, enriched with new pieces, became “L'epoca dei pionieri”. The machines were sought out by following the sales records from 1950 onward. Almost all were donated by their owners and were only cleaned, not restored, so that they can be seen as they were when in use.

The seat is the Maison de la Tôr, a historic building already mentioned in a document of 1768, restored by the municipality of Saint-Nicolas with European funds, which has always housed the village bread oven and dairy. The route also shows the social and economic impact of the arrival of the engine in the countryside.

Highlights

  • Motostandard RR3, the first machine to work the meadows of the Aosta Valley (1950–1955)
  • Swiss-made Rapid REX motor mower
  • The first chainsaws of the 1960s (McCulloch, Homelite)
  • Vintage sprayers and electric fences
  • Maison de la Tôr, historic building with the village bread oven and dairy

Permanent exhibition

  • L'epoca dei pionieri – A collection of about a hundred farm machines from the 1950s and 1960s, showing the encounter between the farmer and the engine.
