About the museum
The museum commemorates Jean-Baptiste Cerlogne (1826–1910), an Aosta Valley priest and poet born in the village of Cerlogne, in Saint-Nicolas, into a farming family. At the age of eleven he emigrated to Marseille, where he worked as a chimney sweep and then as a cook. After returning to the valley in 1848, he took part in the First Italian War of Independence and was taken prisoner. Having entered the seminary late, in 1878 he was assigned to the parish of Champdepraz. He is known for his poems in Franco-Provençal patois and for the “Dictionnaire du patois valdôtain”.
The collection grew out of the work of Renato Willien, a writer, man of the theatre and photographer, who gathered works and personal objects of Cerlogne and of other past authors writing in the local language. On 16 October 1967 Willien founded the Centro di studi francoprovenzali (Centre for Franco-Provençal Studies) here. The centre later moved to Fossaz-Dessus, where it now has its headquarters and runs the museum.
The museum is in the house at La Cure, next to the parish church. In the former vaulted stable on the lower floor, a gallery for temporary exhibitions has been set up, opened with works by the sculptor Carlo Gadin.
