About the museum
The museum, dedicated to Paola Benzo Dapino, is set up in the former convent complex of the church of San Francesco, which belonged to the Conventual Friars Minor. It is owned by the Comune di Cassine, which supported the project together with other public bodies and banking foundations, and with the contribution of the Dapino family. The idea arose from a proposal of the Associazione Culturale degli Amici di Cassine after the 1979 exhibition “S. Francesco di Cassine: sopravvivenze di un monumento gotico”; the museum was inaugurated in 2011.
The project brought the surviving furnishings of the convent together in a single body and made it possible to reconstruct the chapter house, previously divided into two rooms, with its frescoes, and to recover the sacristy and another adjoining room. A new entrance structure recalls the function of the ancient cloister, now lost, and gives access in parallel to the chapter house and the sacristy.
The route includes the 14th-century chapter house, where the friars' chapter met; the late-medieval sacristy with coffered ceiling, altered in 1713 with large cupboards for relics; the picture gallery; and the church of San Francesco, the most important building of the complex. Among the collections, the series of twenty-eight wooden reliquaries attributed to Sebastiano Ippoliti or his workshop, and the reliquary of the triregnum, stand out.
