About the museum
The villa was built in the 15th century as the country residence of the Lombard Vimercati family and was enlarged in the second half of the 16th century. In 1601, through an exchange between families, it passed to the wealthy Carlotti family, who completed it in 1632 with a fine garden and statues. In 1635 the family received its noble title from the Grand Duke of Tuscany and began major extension work: because of its size and the fields surrounding it, the residence was recognised as a palazzo. Bought by the municipality of Caprino Veronese in 1937, it has housed the municipal offices since 1952.
The civic museum is on the ground floor. It was founded at the wish of Professors Solinas and Marangoni and their collaborators, who wanted a permanent place to display the local historical finds they had gathered over the years, from prehistory to the present day. One section is devoted to objects from the First World War.
The most remarkable room is the Sala dei Sogni (Room of Dreams), with grotesque frescoes, while the most valuable piece is the 14th-century Compianto (Lamentation) found in the former church of the Santo Sepolcro (Holy Sepulchre) in Caprino.
