About the museum

The documentation centre is housed in the former cellar of the Opera Pia di Subbiano, next to the church of Santa Maria della Visitazione, and is linked to the network of the Ecomuseo del Casentino. Two rooms display finds from the excavations carried out by the Gruppo Archeologico Giano in the territories of Subbiano and Capolona, under the scientific direction of the Soprintendenza per i beni archeologici della Toscana. The same group carried out the recovery, restoration and display of the material.

The route moves backwards in time and is organised in three sections: the lost ancient churches, with inscriptions and material from buildings that no longer exist; funerary rites, with the reconstruction of two 1st-century tombs, one an inhumation and one a cremation, which yielded among other things a bronze mirror; and the forms and uses of black-gloss and red-gloss pottery. Among the most precious finds is a 6th-century BC dragon fibula of the Etruscan Orientalising phase, which is the subject of a teaching booklet for schools.

The archaeological group offers workshops for schools and, in July, as part of the Notti dell’Archeologia, in-depth talks on the finds.
