About the museum
The museum is an outpost of the Ecomuseo del Casentino and is located in Strada in Casentino, a hamlet of Castel San Niccolò, in the spaces of the former church of the Collegio dei Salesiani. It was created to study, document and pass on the tangible and intangible heritage linked to stone in the Solano valley and, more broadly, in the Casentino.
The choice of elements to highlight grew out of two parallel paths: research by the University of Florence, with surveys and excavations in medieval archaeology that involved local residents, and the recovery of local knowledge through the community map of the Alta Valle del Solano and conversations with families of stone carvers.
The exhibition is organised in four sections: “Genius Loci” on landscape and traditions, “Medioevo di pietra” with artefacts and finds from the excavation at Sant’Angelo a Cetica, “Gli scalpellini di Strada in Casentino” on the history and work of the families of stone carvers, and “L’arte della pietra oggi” with initiatives and routes. The visit is completed by multimedia stations with a soundscape and films from the Banca della Memoria of the Unione dei Comuni del Casentino.
