About the museum
The centre occupies a building that in the 15th century was a church dedicated to Santa Maria di Loreto and that, after the 17th-century plague, passed to the cult of San Rocco. In the mid-20th century it was deconsecrated and used as a covered car park; after 1997 the Soprintendenza (heritage authority) acquired it and converted it into a museum space. It was inaugurated in 2004 together with the Ocriticum archaeological park.
The route is laid out over three floors. The upper floor, accessible from Piazza XX Settembre, is a hall for conferences, screenings and temporary exhibitions. On the middle floor the archaeological section displays, in six showcases, the finds that emerged on the Ocriticum plateau: terracotta votive offerings, both figural and anatomical, votive masks, statuettes of deities, ceramics, jewellery and Roman coins.
On the ground floor, with an independent entrance from Via Umberto I, the exhibition on emigration recalls in particular the departures for the United States at the end of the 19th century and the passage through Ellis Island. The exhibition was conceived by General Nino Di Paolo, a native of Cansano, who donated it to the village.
