About the museum
The Museo di Annibale, officially the Centro di documentazione sulla Battaglia del Trasimeno (Documentation Centre on the Battle of Trasimeno), opened in 2017 and is named after Professor Giancarlo Susini of the University of Bologna, who studied the battle between 1959 and 1960. It was first housed in the 15th-century Palazzo del Capra and now has its seat at Piazza Garibaldi 7 in Tuoro sul Trasimeno, in a pedestrian area with a panoramic view over the lake.
The route reconstructs the clash of June 217 BC between the Carthaginian army of Annibale and the Roman legions of the consul Gaio Flaminio, one of the largest ambushes in history, and places it within the Second Punic War. The display, updated to the most recent research, is rich in multimedia tools: twenty videos, fifteen panels, infographics, three multimedia stations, a three-dimensional relief model of the battle, and reproductions of period clothing and armour that visitors who are blind or partially sighted can touch. In the projection room, 4D effects allow visitors to relive the stages of the clash.
The museum also has a specialist library with hundreds of volumes, including Susini's research, and hosts conferences and workshops. It is linked to the battle route, a twelve-stop itinerary across the territory.
