About the museum
The Casa del Capitano del Popolo (House of the Captain of the People), also called “dell'antico orologio” (of the old clock), is a 14th-century building in the village of Isola Maggiore, on Lake Trasimeno. It was once the summer residence of the notables who held the office of Capitano. Today it houses the Centro di documentazione Isola Maggiore and is one of the stops on the island's museum route, together with the Museo del merletto (lace museum) and the Pieve di San Michele Arcangelo.
Isola Maggiore is the only island on the lake with an inhabited village. Its fishing community developed from the early Middle Ages and was tied to the presence of Franciscan friars; from 1904 the craft production of pizzo d'Irlanda (Irish lace) also spread, a tradition documented in the Museo del merletto. The house can be visited with a guide through the local tourist office, as part of the island's museum route.
