About the museum

The Palazzo della Corgna was commissioned by Ascanio della Corgna, Marquis of Castiglione del Lago from 1563, and was built by incorporating the Palazzo Baglioni of the early 16th century. Conceived at first as a villa for pleasure and leisure, after the separation from the fief of Castel della Pieve it became the family's residence in the capital of the marquisate. The authorship of the design is uncertain and debated between Galeazzo Alessi and Vignola.

The building has an inverted L-shaped plan and spans four levels. The museum route occupies the first floor, where eight rooms are entirely frescoed, between 1574 and 1590, by a team led by Niccolò Circignani, known as il Pomarancio, with the deeds of Ascanio and mythological and historical themes; among the rooms are the Sala di Paride, the Sala delle gesta di Ascanio and the Sala di Fetonte.

A covered corridor links the palace to the Rocca del Leone, also known as the Rocca Medievale, an irregular pentagonal fortress built on the remains of an Etruscan acropolis. With its crenellated polygonal walls, four towers and triangular keep, it was for centuries the main military stronghold on the shores of Lake Trasimeno; from its towers the whole lake can be seen.
