About the museum
The Museo delle Barche, officially the Centro di documentazione sulle imbarcazioni tradizionali delle acque interne italiane, grew out of a project of the Atlante linguistico dei laghi italiani, devised by Giovanni Moretti of the University of Perugia. It was opened in 2004 by the municipal administration and is located within the walls of the medieval Rocca of Passignano sul Trasimeno.
The route displays traditional boats from Lake Trasimeno, Lake Piediluco and the Padule di Fucecchio, as well as a model of a fassoi, a boat made of lake plants from the Cabras pond in Sardinia. Outside, a reconstruction of the “barchetto del gorro” can be seen; it was used until the 1930s for fishing with the large trawl net known as the gorro.
The most important pieces are two dugout canoes from the 13th century, hollowed out of an oak trunk and recovered from the shore at Passignano during dredging work. Twenty-one thematic panels place the exhibits in a linguistic, historical and archaeological context and illustrate the types of dugout canoe, sailing boats and rafts used on inland waters and along the Italian coasts.
