About the museum
“Spazio Martano: Storia e Territorio” is the civic dispersed museum of Massa Martana. It comprises three sections across two sites: the Complesso monumentale “La Pace”, at Via della Pace 87, which houses the Centro Documentazione Monti Martani and the room of the Museo Italiano Presepi d'Arte, and the Chiesa di San Sebastiano, in Via Guglielmo Marconi, which houses the Antiquarium.
The Centro Documentazione Monti Martani, opened in 2006 and re-displayed with funds from the PNRR (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan), is an interactive, multisensory hub on the history and biodiversity of the area. The route runs from the “Tempo profondo” (deep time: geology and fossils from 200 million years ago, karst phenomena, ammonites studied by Federico Venturi) to the “Antropocene” (Anthropocene), and links human settlement, geological history and agro-ecosystems, in particular olive growing and viticulture.
The Museo Italiano Presepi d'Arte displays examples of Italian nativity art. The Antiquarium is a small room with finds from the excavations of the Vicus Martis and the best pieces of the former documentation centre, with maps, backlit panels and touch screens for exploring archaeological sites, as well as wooden statues, sculptures and paintings.
