About the museum
The complex takes its name from Lucrezia della Genga, a noblewoman from Ancona who in 1425 gave a building near the walls of Todi to a community of Third Order Franciscan sisters. The monastery, enlarged with neighbouring buildings, went into decline after the economic crisis at the end of the 15th century, the landslides of around 1760 and the suppression of religious orders in the 19th century.
After various uses in the 20th century, the building was restored in 1987 under special law no. 545. Since 2008 it has housed the Museo Lapidario, officially opened in 2009, which occupies the apse of the former church of San Giovanni Battista and two adjoining rooms.
The collection, owned by the municipality, brings together stone material from antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era from Todi and the surrounding area. The route runs in chronological order from the Roman era to the 19th century and makes it one of the oldest collections in Umbria, after that of Gubbio.
