About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the Ferramonti internment camp in the municipality of Tarsia, built in the summer of 1940 and the largest of the fifteen camps of the fascist regime. The first group, about 160 Jews from Rome, arrived on 20 June 1940. Most internees were foreign Jews, but there were also political opponents, refugees and other people considered undesirable. British forces liberated the camp in September 1943, and it was officially closed on 11 December 1945.
The International Museum of Memory, owned by the municipality of Tarsia, was inaugurated on 25 April 2004 next to the camp site. The route winds through restored pavilions and holds a substantial collection of documents, police registration cards with photographs of internees, family letters and personal belongings. Since 2009 a photographic section on the Shoah has been on display, and historical films and testimonies conclude the visit.
In 2018 a library dedicated to the Austrian publisher Gustav Brenner, who was interned at Ferramonti, was opened on the site of the camp.
