About the museum

The Claut visitor centre occupies a two-storey building in the centre of the village, recently renovated and run by the Parco Naturale Dolomiti Friulane. The ground floor houses an information point, a reception area and two rooms for temporary exhibitions, while the entire first floor hosts the permanent exhibition of the Museo Casa Clautana.

The museum, which is completed by the historic “Ciasa da fum” (smoke house) a couple of hundred metres away, tells the story of life in the past in the Val Cellina through the figure of the woman of Claut. The displays show her work at home, in the fields and in the stable, and her role as an itinerant seller of wooden tools made by craftsmen during the winter, when she set off “fora pal mont” (out into the world). The route invites visitors to compare past and present, technological progress and social values, starting from a reality poor in goods but rich in dignity.

The venue also hosts, for some years now, a display on the retreat of Italian soldiers after Caporetto, with images and voices from the diary of a young local woman, finds from the Forcella Clautana position and a reconstruction of the Strada degli Alpini. The museum periodically organises days with craftsmen at work using original tools.
