About the museum

The Poffabro visitor centre, in the hamlet of Poffabro in Frisanco in the Val Colvera, occupies the village’s former dairy cooperative. The Latteria Sociale di Poffabro was founded on 24 October 1932 and opened on 9 April 1933 with seventy members. It was partly financed by a loan of 40,000 lire from the Cassa di Risparmio di Udine, repaid in full by 1945. Milk was collected twice a day from the hamlets, processing was entrusted to a cheesemaker and the members took turns in the operations. As milk production declined, the dairy closed in the second half of the 1960s.

On the ground floor the dairy can be visited with the original 1930s machinery and equipment and with the history of Frisanco’s dairies; the upper floor introduces the geomorphology, vegetation, flora and fauna of the Park and presents the architecture, landscape and geology of the Val Colvera. The permanent exhibition “In mont – le malghe del Parco” (Up in the mountains – the Park’s alpine huts) shows the interior of a casera (cheese hut), with a reconstructed hearth and the tools for making cheese, butter and ricotta, and a multimedia station that gathers the caseras still active or reduced to ruins in the Park’s territory.
