About the museum
The Natural History Museum of Chies d'Alpago was created with financial support from the Comunità Montana and the Comune di Chies d'Alpago. The displays took several years of work and were curated in collaboration with the geologist Edoardo Semenza, lecturer at the University of Ferrara, with Renzo Stefani, lecturer in comparative anatomy at the University of Cagliari, and with other contributors.
The building spans three floors and, with an educational focus, presents collections and specimens from all branches of natural science relevant to the province of Belluno.
Among the most interesting collections are the dioramas, the mycotheca with its rich collection of fungi, and the xylotheca of woods in cross-section. Among the specimens stand out the jaw of an odontocete, a toothed whale similar to dolphins that lived in the ancient sea of the Alpago, and the Sampierolo, a fish endemic to Lake Santa Croce.
