About the museum
The Andreis visitor centre, run by the Parco Naturale Dolomiti Friulane, houses the permanent exhibition “Avifauna del Parco” (Birdlife of the Park), opened in 2001 and devoted to birds and their relationship with the environment and with people. The core of the display is an ornithological collection of more than two hundred stuffed specimens, including species from the Park and from the whole region. The building also has a teaching room and a room for screenings and lectures.
The centre is linked to the Area Avifauna, a rescue centre for injured birds with a classroom, a natural history workshop, nature trails on Monte Cjavac and the San Daniele hill, holding and acclimatisation aviaries, and a link with a veterinary clinic.
In the aviaries above the village live raptors that can no longer be released, such as golden eagle, common buzzard, peregrine falcon, common kestrel, Eurasian sparrowhawk, goshawk and tawny owl. Visitors can observe them up close, provided they move calmly and do not touch the nets. Where possible, birds that have been cared for are released back into the wild, sometimes during public events near the aviaries.
