About the museum
The Pinacoteca civica occupies the former church of San Francesco in Piazza Caprera, in Nocera Umbra. The building was constructed between 1494 and 1498 to a design by Antonio di Pietro da Castelrotto, after a Franciscan convent had been allowed to settle in the town in the 14th century. With the Napoleonic suppression of 1809 and then of the religious orders in 1860, the complex fell into decay and passed to the Comune; the cloister was demolished towards the end of the 19th century.
The first museum opened in 1957 with works from suppressed religious buildings, and was rearranged in 1994. After the closure following the earthquake of 1997, the picture gallery reopened in 2003 at the end of the works. The church has a large single nave with pointed arches and a polygonal apse.
Among the works on display are a Crucifix by an Umbrian painter of the second half of the 13th century, the tempera-on-panel polyptych by Niccolò di Liberatore, called l’Alunno, and the “Meeting of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate”, attributed to Matteo di Pietro da Gualdo.
