About the museum
The museum opened in 1987 in an old forge in the village of Santa Caterina, a hamlet of Roccalbegna, on the initiative of Alessandro Giustarini, a lover of local history who later became mayor. It was originally called the Museo etnografico di Santa Caterina.
In 2005 it was renovated and joined the Sistema museale Amiata grossetano; it is also part of the network of the Musei di Maremma.
On the ground floor are tools and objects of domestic life and rural work, mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries, with fire as the central theme: charcoal burners, blacksmiths and kiln workers, but also bread-making, pottery with pieces from the Sorano and Pitigliano area, objects linked to the Maggio songs and Holy Week, and handmade toys. The upper floor is devoted to the stollo and the focarazza, the fire rite held at Santa Caterina every 24 November, with two photographic collections, one in black and white from 1982 and one in colour.
