About the museum

The museum is located in Levigliani, in the municipality of Stazzema, and forms part of the museum system of the Corchia Park together with the museum “Lavorare Liberi”. It was conceived to gather the finest examples of the Apuan marble culture that has survived over time, and it preserves, in a compact space, significant examples of the most characteristic stone productions, especially the serial ones.

The route offers an overview of marble working through the centuries, from the simplest objects to finely inlaid works and from everyday artefacts to sacred works. Among the materials on show are the coloured marbles of the Apuan Alps, now almost forgotten by the extractive industry, Baroque inlaid work, and mortars used in the kitchen and for preparing herbal remedies.

An archaeological section presents finds from chance discoveries and from excavations in the nearby necropolis of Levigliani (3rd–2nd century BC), considered the largest burial ground of the Apuan Ligurians. The museum also serves as a centre for applied research into ancient marble-working techniques.
