About the museum

The collection brings together the works donated by Mario Delitala (Orani 1887 – Sassari 1990) to the Comune di Orani on the occasion of his hundredth birthday. Delitala is regarded as one of the leading Sardinian graphic artists of the 20th century: a printmaker known nationally, a painter and an innovator of art on the island. His interest in engraving and woodcut was sparked during his stay in Milan, where he attended an advanced course in lithographic drawing (1910–1911), and it grew stronger during his years in Venice (1920–1923).

The collection comprises 66 works: woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and two oil paintings in relief. The display runs along the walls of a gallery room and in the council chamber named after him, in the building that houses the Town Hall, which occupies a former 1610 convent of the Friars Minor Observant in the historic centre.

Among the works are portraits of his parents, powerful sacred scenes and images of village and peasant life, from the bomborombò dance to grape treading. The engravings “Gente del 1908”, “Gente del 1918”, “Eroi” and “Gente del 1938 – Aratori” depict moments in the life of the communities of Barbagia.
