About the museum

The Museo del Costume is the largest ethnographic museum in Sardinia and the only museum institution directly run by the Region. Permanently open since 1976 under the name Museo della vita e delle tradizioni popolari sarde, it is managed by the ISRE and carries out documentation and research across the whole regional territory. It reopened to the public on 19 December 2015, after extension and redevelopment works and a thorough thematic revision.

The route, arranged in ten thematic rooms, offers a general picture of the island’s traditional life, from work to festivity: housing and clothing, food, religion and popular imagery. It begins with a timeline of Sardinian history from prehistory to 1950, and moves on to productive activities with large display cases and dioramas, a room with about 350 traditional breads, and the spaces devoted to weaving.

On the upper floor 54 traditional costumes, a reconstructed cumbessia and over 450 jewels and amulets are displayed. The visit ends with the room of the Barbagia carnival, with the masks of Mamoiada, Ottana, Orotelli and Orani, and with a selection of traditional musical instruments, including the launeddas. The collections comprise about 8,000 items.
