About the museum
The Ecomuseo dei terrazzamenti e della vite focuses on the terraced landscape and vineyards of Cortemilia, in the Bormida di Millesimo valley. Cortemilia was for a long time a strategic trading hub; after the Second World War it experienced economic decline, aggravated by pollution from the former Acna chemical plant and by the flood of 1994. The ecomuseum was created to rebuild the identity and prospects of the area, starting from its local heritage.
The seat is the Centro di Interpretazione e Documentazione, in the former Pretura (district court building), which spreads over four floors with a route organised by levels of knowledge; it also hosts meetings, small conferences, exhibitions and screenings. In the area you can visit Monteoliveto, a terraced hill with a historic farmhouse, a Romanesque pieve (parish church), vineyards and a collection of old varieties of fruit and vegetables, and Lo Scau, a round stone chestnut-drying kiln in the hamlet of Doglio, reachable on foot through the terraced fields and in operation in autumn.
