About the museum
The Museo del Paesaggio in Castelnuovo Berardenga has been open since 1999 in a building dating from the late nineteenth century that until a few decades ago served as the public slaughterhouse. It is located on the southern edge of the Chianti, near the Crete Senesi, in one of the most typical landscapes of Tuscany, and is a rather unusual kind of museum.
The exhibition area was completely renovated and inaugurated in October 2020. The route uses interactive multimedia applications linked to everyday objects, such as a window, a table, a kneading trough or a pair of binoculars, to tell the economic and human aspects of the landscape, the history of agricultural landscapes and sharecropping, peasant struggles, and the changes in farming, livestock and food that shaped the territory.
The museum also has mobile devices for further exploration of the relationship between landscape, art, architecture and literature, a smell station, an educational section and a space where local wines can be tasted. The visit is completed by the Archivio della Memoria, with testimonies and documents on the development of the Chianti landscape, and by a large space on the first floor for temporary exhibitions. The museum is run together with the Fondazione Musei Senesi.
