About the museum
The Diocesan Museum of Sassari is housed in the Cathedral, in the Sagrestia dei Beneficiati and in the crypt of the church of San Michele. The route presents the Treasury of the cathedral and the history of the building and its site.
The core of the collection consists of goldsmiths’ work and liturgical silverware from the 16th to the 20th century, jewels of the Assunta (the Assumption of Mary), reliquaries and vestments from the 19th and 20th centuries, including an imposing Rococo eucharistic throne. A small section is devoted to jewellery worn in Sassari between the 17th and 19th centuries. From the Archivio Nuovo, established in 1754, come Italian and French silverware, embroidery and vestments.
In the crypt of San Michele, eight panels tell the story of the excavations and of the Cathedral; architectural fragments, inscriptions, ceramics, glass, metal and devotional objects document the Romanesque and Gothic phases of the building.
