About the museum
The Pinacoteca nazionale is located in the historic centre of Sassari, in Piazza Santa Caterina, in the former Jesuit College of Canopoleno, a building erected between the late 16th and the early 17th century next to the ancient church of Gesù e Maria, today Santa Caterina. Over time the complex served as a boarding school and as the seat of schools, and was later abandoned. It was acquired by the State in the 1980s and restored to house works of art that came to the State through donations and bequests.
The museum opened in December 2008. Arising mainly from the bequest of the Sassari collector Giovanni Antonio Sanna, it holds more than 400 works across three floors, arranged by theme and in chronological sequence: religious painting from the Middle Ages, with the Master of Ozieri and the Master of Castelsardo; 17th- and 18th-century paintings from the Sanna collection; the 19th-century section opened by Giovanni Marghinotti; and rooms devoted to the leading figures of Sardinian painting from the late 19th to the mid-20th century.
Among the names represented are Giuseppe Biasi, Filippo Figari, Mario Delitala, Antonio Ballero, Stanis Dessy and Eugenio Tavolara. Since 2022 a room has been dedicated to the Sassari painter Edina Altara. The museum is managed by the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Sardinia of the Ministry of Culture.
