About the museum
The Palazzo di Città stands where the Palazzo Comunale, the seat of power and of the city's institutions, was built in the second half of the 13th century. The medieval building faced the present-day Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and kept its appearance for centuries, despite the damage suffered in 1527 and 1780, until it was demolished in 1826.
The current neoclassical palace was rebuilt to a design by the engineer Giuseppe Cominotti between 1826 and 1829 and housed municipal offices until the move to Palazzo d'Usini in 1878. At the end of the 19th century it was restored and decorated. In 1947 the interior theatre lost its original wooden structures and its 19th-century appearance; these were restored with work completed in 2006.
Today the rooms house the Museo della Città, organised in two wings. The west wing, entered from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, presents places, memory and the city's identity, the graphic reconstruction of the walled city, historical photographs, the Sala dei Candelieri and the Teatro Civico. The east wing, entered from Via Sebastiano Satta, is dedicated to traditional costume from town and country and to urban religiosity, with the rites of Holy Week and the Carnival.
