About the museum
The Compendio Garibaldino on the island of Caprera, in the La Maddalena archipelago, is the place where Giuseppe Garibaldi lived with his family from 1856 until his death in 1882, devoting himself to the farm. He worked the land himself, tended the orchard and kitchen garden, and planted a large pine tree for the birth of his daughter Clelia in 1867. The complex documents a simple way of life and a love of nature.
The original house, enlarged in 1861 and 1880, has a square plan with interconnecting rooms and is organised around a central courtyard without windows, from which a staircase leads to a terrace with a view over the whole archipelago. Beside the Casa Bianca are Garibaldi’s first home on Caprera, made from a restored stazzo (Sardinian farmstead) with a wooden house brought from Nice, the Casa di Ferro, a wooden structure clad in sheet metal that houses the library, and the old storehouse with the strategy room.
The Casa Bianca preserves relics and personal belongings: in the relics room the white cloak with the jacket, the red shirt and the South American poncho, and in the marriage bedroom the orthopaedic bed of his last years; there are also books, photographs and farm tools. Garibaldi’s tomb, closed by a large granite stone, also holds his wife and children. The Compendio was opened to the public in 1976 and since 2014 has been part of the Sistema museale di Caprera together with the Memoriale Giuseppe Garibaldi.
