About the museum
The Museo archeologico navale “Nino Lamboglia” in La Maddalena is dedicated to the famous Roman wreck that sank off the island of Spargi around 120 BC and to its cargo, recovered in the waters of the archipelago. The ship carried hundreds of wine amphorae and tableware vessels produced in Campania, and the museum is almost unique of its kind.
The finds from the crew and the ship’s equipment provide valuable information on the organisation of Roman maritime trade, while the wreck is a chronological reference point for the production and export of many classes of objects.
The central element of the display is a full-scale reconstruction of a section of the hull of the Spargi ship, with 202 amphorae showing the stowage system. Lead anchor stocks and other materials from the archipelago’s waters are also notable. The museum is located on the Strada Panoramica, in the locality of Mongiardino. According to the regional portal, the museum is currently closed and no reopening date can be given.
