About the museum
The museum is housed in the parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena and tells the story of the founding and development of the town, whose history is closely bound up with the cult of the patron saint. It is part of the museum system of the Diocese of Tempio-Ampurias.
The main core is the treasure of Santa Maria Maddalena, made up largely of votive offerings given by the faithful: Gallura jewellery from the 16th to the 18th century, statues, paintings, tapestries, antique books, sacred vestments and liturgical silverware such as monstrances and chalices. Among the works are silverware bearing the coat of arms of Baron Giorgio Andreas De Geneys, appointed commander of the Sardinian navy in 1799.
The history of La Maddalena, an island that was the stage for events involving the European powers, is also recalled by an altar service donated to the parish by Horatio Nelson: three neoclassical silver pieces made in Barcelona in 1804, accompanied by autograph letters from the admiral. The museum is connected to a specialised library of religious culture.
