About the museum
The museum is housed in the environmental education centre of the Arcipelago di La Maddalena National Park, in the locality of Stagnali on the island of Caprera. The building was erected in the early 20th century by the Ministry of War (Navy) as part of the Stagnali military complex, to house troops, on land expropriated from Garibaldi’s heirs. During both World Wars the 3rd Bersaglieri Regiment, the 45th Infantry Regiment and the 59th Infantry Regiment “Calabria” were billeted there.
The display, prepared by the Associazione naturalistica paleontologica mineralogica “Giovanni Cesaraccio”, which also runs the services, occupies two exhibition rooms with around 300 samples of rocks, beach sands, minerals and fossils, largely from Caprera. Notable items include black tourmaline crystals (sciorlo) up to 5 centimetres, small crystals of bertrandite and almandine garnet, and large groups of smoky quartz weighing up to 150 kilograms from Punta Crucita. A teaching room with video displays geological maps, and one section is devoted to the quarrying of Cala Francese granite. There is also a small laboratory for preparing samples.
According to the regional record, the museum is temporarily closed for energy-efficiency works. The reopening will be announced through the official channels of the park authority.
