About the museum
The Pranu Muttedu archaeological complex lies near Goni, in central-southern Sardinia, and is one of the most important funerary complexes of Sardinian prehistory. The park covers about 200,000 square metres, is divided into two parts and is covered by centuries-old oak trees and Mediterranean scrub. Some Sardinian sites with the prehistoric funerary traditions of the domus de janas were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025.
Excavations carried out in several campaigns by the archaeologist Enrico Atzeni, starting in 1980, have yielded a large quantity of finds of various kinds, attributable to settled communities of the Ozieri culture, dating to the Late Neolithic (3200-2800 BC). The presence of numerous tombs and menhirs suggests that the site was used for funerary and religious rites linked to the cult of the ancestors.
The complex has the highest concentration of menhirs in Sardinia after the vast site of Biru 'e Concas at Sorgono: about sixty are known, arranged in pairs, alignments or groups. There are also burial chambers of various types, originally covered by a mound and enclosed in megalithic circles of blocks set in concentric rings, as well as domus de janas. For its atmosphere the site has been called “the Sardinian Stonehenge”.
