About the museum
The nuraghe stands on the eastern edge of the village of Armungia, in the Gerrei mountains, in a commanding position over the valley of the Flumendosa. It is a single-tower nuraghe about 13 metres in diameter at the base and 10.5 metres high, with a main tholos chamber of 31 courses of stone. It lies in the very centre of the village, next to the Museo Etnografico «Sa Domu de is Ainas», which serves as the access point to the site.
The building is generally dated to between the Middle and Late Bronze Age, although no reference stratigraphy confirms this. Among the materials recovered are Nuragic pottery and a bronze buckle of the 8th–9th century AD, found in 1985. A Byzantine-era cistern bears witness to the reuse of the monument in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Restoration work was carried out in the 1980s and 1990s.
The nuraghe is one of the monuments of the Sistema museale di Armungia, which also includes the ethnographic museum, the Bottega del Fabbro (blacksmith's workshop) and the Museo Storico «Emilio e Joyce Lussu». It stands out from other nuraghi because of its rare location inside an inhabited centre.
