About the museum

The Sa Carcaredda complex stands at about 800 metres above sea level, in a holm oak wood overlooking the Gennargentu massif and the tacco of Perda Liana. The structures belong to a Nuragic community of the Bronze and Iron Ages and include a circular temple, an extensive village of which the line of the walls is especially distinct, and several giants’ tombs. A peculiarity of the site is the apparent absence of a reference nuraghe.

The temple, built with irregular blocks of granite, porphyry and, more rarely, limestone, consists of two rectangular rooms that open onto a circular space; inside stood a stone altar that reproduced the curtain walls of a complex nuraghe. At its foot offerings were placed for the deity, including small bronzes and everyday objects. Outside, excavations have identified a rectangular structure where votive offerings were kept, later gathered in hoards of copper and bronze.

About two hundred metres from the temple, in the wood, lies giants’ tomb no. 1, well preserved and of great monumentality, with a wide exedra where rites linked to the cult of the dead took place; a second tomb, with an exedra of slabs set into the ground, is also in good condition. The abundance of small bronzes, copper ingots and amber jewellery shows the religious and commercial importance of the mountain sanctuaries in the Ogliastra. Today the site is managed, together with S’Arcu ’e is Forros, by the company Archeonova, an in-house company of the Comune di Villagrande Strisaili.
