About the museum
The open-air museum preserves and showcases the works that Maria Lai (1919–2013) left in her native village of Ulassai. The project began with “Legarsi alla montagna” (1981), a participatory intervention involving the whole community: the village houses were tied to the mountain by a long sky-blue ribbon, considered the first relational artwork in Italy.
In the following years the artist left further works in the village, integrated into the landscape and everyday life: the wash-house, with interventions by Luigi Veronesi, Costantino Nivola and Guido Strazza; “Le capre cucite”, “La strada del rito” and “La Scarpata” in the 1990s; and, in the early 2000s, “Il gioco del volo dell’oca”, the large blackboard by the primary school, the glazed terracotta books in Via Venezia, “Il muro del groviglio” and “La casa delle inquietudini”.
The route is marked by information panels in Italian and English and can be walked on foot at your own pace. The Stazione dell’Arte, opened in 2006 in the former railway station, is the contemporary art museum dedicated to Maria Lai and holds the largest public collection of her works. It is a separate venue with paid admission, and it also coordinates visits to the open-air museum.
