About the museum

The Parco archeologico Bosco Seleni lies at about 1,000 metres above sea level, on a plateau behind Lanusei, in Ogliastra, six kilometres from the town. From here a wide panorama opens over three valleys and about 30 km of coastline. The site offered good conditions for defence, water, flora, fauna and pasture, and hosted a Nuragic village at the foot of the nuraghe: about 200 huts have been recorded, most of them still covered by woodland.

The Gennacili complex stands on a granite block on the eastern slope of Monte Seleni. Much of the nuraghe was demolished in 1860 during excavations in search of objects, and since 2007 the monument has been protected, with consolidation of its walls. In the park there are two giants’ tombs: Seleni I, of the Middle Bronze Age, about 11 metres long, and Seleni II, of the Late Bronze Age, about a century more recent and 12.3 metres long. Both have a façade with an arched stele, an exedra for rituals and a long funerary corridor covered by slabs.

According to the archaeoastronomical studies of Giulio Magli, Seleni I would be oriented towards the sun at the winter solstice and Seleni II towards the moon at its southernmost extreme. Since 2023 the Nur Archeopark, a historical-archaeological theme park dedicated to Nuragic civilisation, has also been open in the same wood.
