About the museum
The nuraghe S'Ortali 'e su Monti, also known as nuraghe San Salvatore, is located in the territory of Tortolì, in Ogliastra, and is part of the San Salvatore archaeological park. It has an irregularly elliptical enclosure wall, a central tower and side towers. The central tower was excavated in 2010 down to the layer of the construction period, around 1500 BC; burials of the Roman period were found in the stratigraphy.
The entrance has a lintel surmounted by a small triangular window that lightens the weight of the masonry; the lintel block was obtained by reusing a menhir, perhaps coming from the alignment of which two stones remain on the nearby hill. Outside the enclosure there were huts, many with querns, and to the north an area for storing grain in ten silos: this suggests that the inhabitants grew and processed grain.
Near the Neolithic sacred area of the nearby hill, the inhabitants built a giants' tomb; near the nuraghe there is also a rock-cut tomb of the late Neolithic (domus de janas).
