About the museum
The former cathedral of Tratalias stands in the centre of what remains of the medieval village, the original nucleus of the Sulcis town. Two inscriptions preserved inside mark the start and end of the works, between 1213 and 1282. The church was the episcopal see of the diocese of Sulci until 1503, when the seat moved to Iglesias; the bishop had transferred here from Sant’Antioco because of Saracen raids. The dedication to Nostra Signora di Monserrato dates from the Catalan-Aragonese period.
The building is in Pisan Romanesque style, with features that anticipate Gothic, and is built of limestone and trachyte. The façade has two levels, with a central portal and a rose window; the interior has three naves separated by pillars and round arches, with a semicircular apse and a wooden roof. In the left nave a small retable of 1596 is preserved, showing the Madonna enthroned between Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.
The old village was abandoned in the second half of the 20th century because of water infiltration and ground subsidence following the creation of the Monte Pranu reservoir, and the town was rebuilt nearby. The church is visited together with the Museo del territorio trataliese, in the same square, which displays images and a reconstruction of ancient Tratalias.
