About the museum
The park covers a limestone hill in the centre of Carbonia, between Corso Iglesias and Via Alghero, around a necropolis of domus de janas. The tombs date back to at least the late Neolithic, from around 3700 BC; so far 26 have been identified, with very different layouts and modifications from later periods. Recent research points to the presence of the San Ciriaco culture (4400–3900 BC). Some tombs were reused in more recent times as storerooms, kilns and animal shelters.
Research began in the 1980s; since 2014 the park has been part of the Sistema museale urbano di Carbonia (SiMuC). Since 2012 stratigraphic excavations have focused on Tomb 12, whose finds are displayed at the Museo archeologico Villa Sulcis, which is linked to the park by a covered passageway.
At the summit, above the necropolis, stands Medau Sa Grutta, a traditional rural dwelling of the Sulcis area, inhabited for the last two to three hundred years. Its spaces host temporary exhibitions and cultural events; the interior of a reconstructed Neolithic hut can be visited by reservation.
