About the museum
The Nuraghe Albucciu stands at Malchittu, on the outskirts of Arzachena, along the state road 125 towards Olbia. It overlooks a wide, fertile plain and was the political and economic point of reference for the smaller settlements on the surrounding heights. It is part of the Parco Archeologico di Arzachena, managed by the municipal company Ge.Se.Co.
The building has a sub-rectangular plan, unlike the more common truncated-cone tower, and was built by exploiting an outcrop of granite rock which became part of the structure. It is considered a “mixed” nuraghe, a type widespread in Gallura, because it combines features of corridor nuraghi and of tholos nuraghi. The lintelled entrance opens onto a straight façade 20 metres long and 5.5 metres high, crowned by eight corbels which perhaps supported a wooden balustrade.
Inside there are niches and a duct in the ceiling linked to the closing system, a deep storeroom and an elliptical tholos-covered chamber; a staircase climbs to the terrace with several rooms and a semicircular open-air area, from which a large circular chamber, the largest room of the nuraghe, can be reached. The objects found (tools for processing milk and cereals, a small dagger, a statuette, glass-paste beads and fragments of Cretan-Cypriot type copper ingots) document everyday life and exchanges with the Mediterranean, from the 14th to the 7th century BC.
