About the museum
The giants' tomb of Coddu Vecchiu, also known as Coddu 'Ecchju, lies in the locality of Capichera, about six kilometres from Arzachena, along the provincial road SP 14 towards Luogosanto. About one kilometre away is the La Prisgiona nuragic complex. The monument dates from the Bronze Age and is among the best preserved in Sardinia.
It was built in two phases: a gallery tomb between the 21st and 19th centuries BC and, later, between the 18th and 17th centuries BC, the exedra, a semicircular area in front of the tomb. The façade of the exedra is formed by slabs set into the ground, and at its centre rises a large stele decorated with a raised frame, 4.04 metres high. At the base of the stele is a small opening where offerings were placed; ceramic vessels have been found here.
In the funerary corridor people were buried without distinction of sex, age or social role, probably lowered from above through a removable covering slab. A large mound of earth and stones originally covered the entire corridor. The tomb is part of the Parco Archeologico di Arzachena, run by the municipal company Ge.Se.Co.
