About the museum
The giants’ tomb of Li Lolghi stands on a hill rise in the hinterland of Arzachena, at Li Muri, about 9 km from the town, reached by the provincial road to Luogosanto (SP 14) or the one to Bassacutena (SP 115). About one kilometre away lies the Li Muri necropolis. The site is part of the Parco Archeologico di Arzachena, managed by the municipal company Ge.Se.Co.
The large Nuragic collective tomb is 27 metres long and is the result of two building phases: a small gallery tomb (allée couverte) of the Early Bronze Age, between the 21st and 19th centuries BC, and the semicircular façade, made with large slabs set into the ground between the 18th and 14th centuries BC, together with the long funerary corridor and the mound of earth and rubble that covers it.
At the centre of the façade rises a monolithic stele 3.75 metres high with a raised frame, a symbol of the “gateway to the afterlife”; at its base a small opening allowed offerings to be introduced in ceramic vessels. In the space in front of the tomb, the exedra, rites in honour of the ancestors took place, with communal meals and offerings of food and drink attested by numerous ceramic containers.
