About the museum
The Li Muri necropolis lies about 9 km from Arzachena, along the provincial road to Luogosanto (SP 14) or the one to Bassacutena (SP 115). It dates to the Neolithic, about 6,000 years ago, and is the oldest site of the Parco Archeologico di Arzachena, managed by the municipal company Ge.Se.Co. About one kilometre away is the giants’ tomb of Li Lolghi.
The funerary circles are among the oldest evidence of megalithism in Western Europe and find parallels in southern Corsica, in Catalonia and in the French Midi. In Sardinia this type of tomb is found almost only in Gallura. The necropolis consists of four tangent circles, with diameters between 5 and 8.5 metres, delimited by small slabs set on edge in concentric circles which enclosed a mound of stones and earth. The menhirs in the outer circle perhaps marked the tombs, or represented deities or the souls of the dead.
In each circle a rectangular stone chest held one or two bodies in a crouched position, sprinkled with red ochre, a symbol of regeneration. The grave goods, with flint blades, steatite necklaces, polished axes and a small steatite bowl, indicate that important individuals were buried there. In a secluded position is a small collective corridor tomb of the Bronze Age, built over an older circle.
