About the museum
The Santa Barbara nuraghe stands on a small plateau of Monte Manai, at 648 metres above sea level, and overlooks the Abbasanta plain. It takes its name from the ruins of a country chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara that once stood nearby. It is considered the best-known archaeological site in the Macomer area and can be reached from the SS 131, at kilometre 145, near the Macomer-Birori junction.
The structure is a complex basalt nuraghe: a central tower about 15 metres high is surrounded by a quadrilobed bastion almost 9 metres high, which encloses an open courtyard. A village developed around the monument, occupied from the middle of the 2nd millennium BC until the early Middle Ages.
The nuraghe is one of the archaeological sites of Macomer offered by the cooperative Esedra Escursioni together with Tamuli, the necropolis of Filigosa and the Museo Etnografico “Le Arti Antiche”.
